Taungurung custodians share their culture with Inland Rail and John Holland
Taungurung Land and Waters Council led an immersive cultural tour for workers on the Beveridge to Albury Tranche 2 section of Inland Rail, ahead of construction starting.
August 29, 2024
Joining proud Taungurung Elder and guide Aunty Jo and Cultural Heritage Worker and Youth Leader Jonah, Inland Rail and John Holland staff had the opportunity to learn about Taungurung people and their connection to country.
The tour included a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony as well as a guided tour of the Euroa Arboretum, where Aunty Jo and Jonah shared stories of seasonal native plant species and their uses for food, medicine and cultural practice.
This experience provided Inland Rail and John Holland an opportunity to learn from the Taungurung story of country, understanding their continuous and interconnected knowing of country, their cultural values, cultural heritage and cultural practices.
Cultural appreciation tours are a great opportunity to share the history of First Nations peoples, their stories and provide an opportunity to learn, grow and to deepen our knowledge of First Nations people’s connection to country that inspire a joint effort to strengthen culture and country for future generations.
We’re committed to working closing with First Nations people as we build Inland Rail.
