Community Sponsorships and Donations program keeps the Nashos connected

After several COVID postponements, it was great to see the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia (also known as the Nashos) hold their 70th Anniversary and Reunion event in Moree recently. The event featured local tours, a march and dinner in Moree which included entertainment by Normie Rowe.

This initiative was supported through the Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations program. President of the North-West National Servicemen Association, Barry Fitzgerald (pictured) recently visited the Moree Inland Rail office to present a Certificate of Appreciation for helping fund the event and the ongoing support provided by Inland Rail staff.

The Nashos were a group of Australian men who were called up between 1951 and 1972 for compulsory training in the Navy, Army and Air Force. The National Service was part of Australia’s defence preparedness for three decades. Sadly, 212 people died on active service in Borneo and Vietnam. This reunion event was a great opportunity to bring our servicemen together to remember times passed and commemorate those who lost their lives.

Community Sponsorships and Donations program hits funding milestone

Since construction commenced on the Narrabri to North Star project in late 2020, Inland Rail has benefitted more than 18 local community groups with grants worth more than $50,000.

The grants, which range from $1000 up to $4000, have helped support vibrant community events, buy equipment for junior sporting clubs, upgrade community facilities, and care for people less fortunate.

As well as providing funding, our project team and contractor Trans4m Rail have many times rolled up their sleeves and participated in or attended a local event to enjoy festivities with local communities.

One recent grant recipient, North Star CWA, is now installing air conditioning so local children can attend the mobile pre-school over the hot summer months. Projects such as this are making a real and lasting difference for families in these communities.

The final round of the Community Sponsorships and Donations program for the Narrabri to North Star Phase 1 project is currently open and closes on 31 October 2022. Any community groups interested in applying are encouraged to head to our website to find out more information or contact our Stakeholder Engagement Team on 1800 732 761.
