GIS Lead

About the opportunity

As the GIS Lead for Inland Rail, you will be entrusted with the strategic development, maintenance, and operation of our GIS as a central hub for spatial data management and innovative spatial solutions. Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the operational development and continued adoption of Inland Rail’s (IR’s) Esri ArcGIS Enterprise solution and Geocortex web tier as a strategic tool.
  • Ensure the development of the Inland Rail GIS solutions to meet current and emerging requirements.
  • Contribute to the development and promotion of IR GIS standards and specifications within internal Project and external supplier GIS teams.
  • Operating across the wider Program to streamline and automate data flow and ensure data is provided back in a consistent, high quality and compliant data package for efficient integration to the master databases.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of standards and procedures in alignment with ARTC GIS strategy for enhanced quality assurance, data interoperability and governance.
  • Utilise expert technical knowledge and large rail and/or infrastructure project experience and leadership to lead the capture and translate business requirements into effective spatial solutions.
  • Promote advanced tools for self-served data interrogation, extraction, reporting and mapping to support the various Inland Rail stakeholder requirements.
  • Provide appropriate oversight to a distributed technical resource group for the maintenance and development of databases, interactive dashboards, and web applications for sharing information using ArcGIS Enterprise and Geocortex technology operating within a vendor-managed, cloud-hosted environment.
  • Contribute to the delivery of Project and Program requirements including, cartographic products, data processing and analysis, quality assurance and product delivery.

About You

The successful candidate will need to be a hands-on leader who is also willing to roll up their sleeves and contribute at a technical level as part of a high-achieving and service-driven team.

 To ensure success in this position, applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Tertiary qualifications in GIS, or a related discipline, or with extensive industry experience.
  • A pro-active, team player with the ability to handle pressure, solve problems and work autonomously and without supervision, able to contribute to project delivery, impart knowledge and maintain a cohesive and effective team.
  • Experience working in an applied Geospatial environment, preferably within rail, or transport-related organisations, projects, or consultancies.
  • Expert technical capability with practical, applied experience in the operation and customisation of Esri’s ArcGIS core software suite and extensions within the ArcGIS desktop, server, and mobile environments.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a range of spatial databases, services and applications using Esri’s ArcGIS Enterprise and associated web apps and Geocortex Essentials for collaborative data sharing across multi-disciplined teams operating in diverse office and field locations.
  • Relational database knowledge (SQL enterprise geodatabase), Python scripting skills, or FME knowledge, with a competent ability to develop innovative geoprocessing tools, data models and advanced workflows for improved automation and efficiency within large, dynamic project settings.
  • Skills in spatial analysis including (but not limited to) multi-criteria analysis, suitability modelling, surface and terrain analysis, distance, and statistical analysis.
  • Understanding of design, implementation, optimisation and administration of complex spatial databases and sound knowledge of the data types, inputs, and workflows to support rail infrastructure programs during development and construction phase.
  • Writing technical reports, process documentation, business cases, vendor management and the promotion of GIS within the Inland Rail Program.

Desirable Selection Criteria:

  • Interpersonal communication skills supporting internal and external facing interactions at all levels – building partnerships with active engagement to align expectations, share information, create opportunities, and address challenges.
  • Experience in using FME for data format transformation, data workflow modelling, automated data input and data mapping and validation processes.
  • Solid understanding of large survey datasets including LiDAR and conventional survey types, high resolution aerial imagery and processing techniques, CAD data types and experience in GIS interactions with 3D civil and design modelling software (e.g., 12D, Civil 3D, Rail-track).
  • An understanding of Digital Engineering and Digital Twin principles applied across a Project lifecycle.
