The Inland Rail Program is a 1600km rail infrastructure project stretching from Brisbane to Melbourne incorporating new and existing rail track. The program includes the upgrading of existing standard gauge track, the enhancement of existing standard gauge track to cater for double stacking and the construction of new standard gauge links comprising of viaducts, tunnels, rail track, crossings and bridges. About the opportunity


As the Principal Civil and Geotechnical Engineer, where you will take ownership for civil, roads, drainage, earthworks, and geotechnical engineering for Inland Rail. You will take the lead in overseeing engineering and technical matters within your expertise, while also contributing to the development of strategies and plans to mitigate risks in these areas.  

Leading a team of subject matter experts, you will ensure alignment with Inland Rail and ARTC requirements, facilitating solution-based assurance throughout project lifecycles ensuring that the final product is both safe and fit for purpose, in alignment with the program's outcomes.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Lead and manage a team of SMEs, providing technical and functional leadership to both internal and external design teams.
  • Conduct high-level reviews of engineering analysis and designs, ensuring compliance with program and ARTC requirements.
  • Oversee engineering assurance practices, including Stage Gate Reviews, to ensure compliance with Program Technical Requirements.
    Ensure consistent application of the Safety in Design process across Inland Rail in compliance with ARTC Standards.
  •  Establish and lead programs to systematically identify and implement initiatives for lifecycle cost reduction, engaging internal teams to drive and facilitate agreed outcomes.

About you

To ensure success in this position, applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience within the areas of Civil and Engineering.
  • Proven leadership experience infrastructure.
    Tertiary qualification in Engineering.
  • Competence certification including CPEng, RPEQ, and RIW (or demonstrated eligibility to obtain).
  • Extensive knowledge of civil and rail infrastructure.
  • Experience in design and construction engineering experience in infrastructure development.
  • Exceptional communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Highly developed problem resolution skills with relationship management experience.
  • Relevant experience in project management including demonstrated experience contributing to large scale infrastructure projects.

Desirable Selection Criteria

  • Class C Driver’s License.
  • Understanding of, Railway systems, principles and audit requirements, Australian Standards and State Transport agency standards for roads, civil and track infrastructure including the railway National Code of Practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully across a diverse stakeholder group including the private sector, public sector special interest groups, and Federal Government sectors.
