Inland Rail is a once-in-a-generation project that will complete the backbone of Australia’s freight rail network. It will enhance supply chains by providing a transit time of 24 hours or less for freight trains between Melbourne and Brisbane. Inland Rail will connect regional Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland to markets more efficiently, drive substantial cost savings for producers and consumers, and deliver significant economic benefits. Inland Rail is the largest freight rail infrastructure project in Australia and one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the world.

About the opportunity

As the Principal Environmental Advisor for Northern New South Wales, you will have specific requirements to develop and prepare the strategic framework, key strategies, policies and procedures applicable to state and program studies and the provision of expert technical advice for the NSW component of the Inland Rail Program.
You will be instrumental is developing and implementing efficient environmental approvals and compliance in construction in collaboration with the HSE Manager.  Additionally, you will provide leadership and guidance to the project team and support engagement with environmental regulators.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and deliver relevant state and program studies, assessments and works scopes.
  • Provide strategic and technical advice in the assessment and mitigation of environmental impacts and development of planning, environmental management strategies and construction.
  • Facilitate the integration of planning and environmental data within the GIS information management platform and provide advice and strategies for the securing of environmental and planning statutory licenses and approvals.
  • Collaborate with other staff and contractors to help promote and develop the Inland Rail Program team.
  • Develop and deliver relevant state and program strategies, policies, processes and plans.
  • Develop and ensure that Inland Rail’s Environment Management System is refined to reflect relevant planning and environment legislation across all states in which it operates.

About you

To ensure success in this position, applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or an environmentally related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with senior management and multi-disciplinary functions to build support for an environmentally compliant work culture.
  • Negotiate with internal and external stakeholders on complex environment and policy issues.
  • Substantial experience in managing complex environment issues with a high profile in the community.
  • High level knowledge of emerging trends, key benchmarks and statutory and regulatory requirements to inform best practice and value management outcomes
  • Knowledge of relevant State (NSW) and Federal environmental legislation including project approval process.
  • Experience in implementing and managing an Environmental Management System.
  • Strong literacy with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and customised software packages.
  • Experience in large infrastructure projects.
  • A Class C unrestricted Driver’s License.
