Inland Rail is a once-in-a-generation project that will complete the backbone of Australia’s freight rail network. It will enhance supply chains by providing a transit time of 24 hours or less for freight trains between Melbourne and Brisbane. Inland Rail will connect regional Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland to markets more efficiently, drive substantial cost savings for producers and consumers, and deliver significant economic benefits. Inland Rail is the largest freight rail infrastructure project in Australia and one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the world.

About the opportunity

As the Senior Signalling Engineer, you will play a critical role in the development, design, and implementation of signalling systems for the Inland Rail program. You’ll ensure that all signalling works meet the highest safety, quality, and performance standards, working collaboratively with internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders to achieve seamless project delivery

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Provide management overview of signalling engineering to deliver the Beveridge to Albury Tranche 2 Project scope requirements.
  • Manage signalling design development, delivery of site works, and be responsible for program scheduling, cost control, procurement as well as supporting the Rail Manager to ensure key project deliverables of cost, time and quality are met.
  • Manage operational readiness and assist with technical inputs into construction management and
    handover planning.
  • Interface with the end user and main contractor to facilitate planning, commissioning and handover to
    standard and requirements.
  • Plan and delivery of project in accordance with ARTC and VLine standards.
  • Manage quality assurance for signalling design and construction, planning and carrying out audits.
  • Undertake reviews of signalling construction documentation to ensure works are completed in a safe manner and not cause any unforeseen disruption to the VLine and ARTC network.
  • Report to the Rail Manager regarding the status and performance of design and delivery components of project to ensure critical milestones are achieved.
  • Promote a positive safety culture within the team to conform with current Work Health and Safety (WH&S) and relevant Rail Safety legislation.

About You

A successful Signal Engineer is a detail-oriented problem-solver with strong technical expertise in rail signalling systems, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to safety and quality. They thrive in collaborative environments, effectively manage competing priorities, and bring innovative solutions to complex challenges in rail infrastructure projects.

 

To ensure success in this position, applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent qualifications and experience.
    Signalling design and construction experience in Major Rail infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in engineering maintenance, construction or project management of signalling projects.
  • Expert knowledge of Railway signalling systems and Australian Standards for track infrastructure including the railway National Code of Practice.
  • Experience of signalling work on ARTC and VLine infrastructure.
  • Significant experience in the delivery of rail signalling projects in a brownfield environment.
  • Knowledge of or an awareness of Work Health and Safety principles and relevant safety legislation.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Highly developed problem resolution and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commercial acumen.
  • Drivers Licence.

Desirable Selection Criteria

  • Project management experience in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Experience in tendering and negotiation of contracts of varying complexities.
  • Eligibility for membership of the Institute of Engineers Australia.
  • Eligibility for an ARTC Statement of Competency in Signal Engineering, Team Management, or Project Management
