Signal box removal, Benalla, 22-24 March 2025
The Benalla Signal Box is being removed as it conflicts with new rail and pedestrian infrastructure being constructed as part of Inland Rail. In accordance with our planning approval conditions, removal works will be undertaken between Saturday 22 March and Monday 24 March 2025.
What can I expect?
- Round-the-clock works between 6am Saturday 22 March and 6pm Monday 24 March at the Nunn Street level crossing (including night works). Most of the works will take place overnight.
- Traffic management and signage along Nunn Street (Midland Highway) and Mackellar Street during works
- Pedestrian detour between Railway Place and Mackellar Street is via the station pedestrian underpass
- Reduced road speeds near works
- Temporary fencing around the works area
- Additional truck movements where the works are occurring
- Workers using machinery, equipment, hand tools and service vehicles
- Nearby residents may experience some periods of high noise and vibration.
Machinery used
Excavators, crane, telehandler, straight boom lift and light towers.
How we're managing impacts
- Traffic management and reduced road speeds will be in place to ensure safe access for all road users
- Two-way traffic will be maintained for the majority of works
- Where possible, lights will be positioned away from residential properties
- The scheduling of 24-hour works is to take advantage of no trains operating, having complete track access and minimising disruption to vehicles and pedestrians.
What's next
Materials identified as suitable for salvage during the removal works will be catalogued and stored off-site for heritage interpretation of the signal box within the new station precinct.
