Traffic detour

During the temporary road closure, motorists will be diverted via County Boundary Road, Stanester Road, Rimbanda Road or Wongabindie Road to reach their destination. See enclosed detour map.

For public safety, road users should observe all traffic control instructions, signage and VMS boards during this period.

Works to be undertaken:

  • Removal of ballast and mats to expose rail and sleepers for tamping
  • Rail tamping, stabilising and regulating
  • Installation of kerbing
  • Level crossing construction activities
  • Implementation of traffic control measures.

What is rail tamping?

A tamping machine or ballast tamper, informally a tamper, is a rail-mounted machine used to pack the track ballast under railway tracks and roadbed to a more durable level.

The tamping machine rides along the new track, lifting the rail and vibrating the top ballast into place. The tamper machine then sets the track into its final position. This method is repeated numerous times to ensure the rail line settles and is ready for operation.

What can I expect

  • Hi-rail vehicles (rolling stock) including a tamping machine undertaking rail works
  • Construction machinery and equipment operating on site
  • Delivery of materials and equipment to site
  • Some of these works will be noisy and mitigation measures will be in place.

Machinery used

  • Hi-rail vehicles including a hi-rail excavator (rolling stock),
  • tamping machine
  • trucks will be used within the construction impact zone.

How we’re managing impacts

  • Traffic controls will be in place, where required, including Variable Message Signage (VMS) boards
  • Water carts will be on site to wet down areas to assist in managing dust.
