About the opportunity

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Lead and manage the design program for the Inland Rail, specifically the Illabo to Stockinbingal greenfield line. Ensure that design teams develop coordinated, buildable and safe designs within the scheduled timeframes, cost constraints, budget approvals and compliance requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Design Manager on the I2S project, you will be responsible for the delivery of civil and earthworks associated with the new rail formation within scheduled timeframes, delivered safely and within budget and quality parameters. You will be required to work closely with the structures and rail delivery teams.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be assisting the Engineering team in the delivery of the Inland Rail Programme I2S portion, and your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in delivering a highly complex program of rail projects that deliver Inland Rail’s objectives.
  • Collaborate across the business and delivery programs to optimise the design and construction ensuring the IR program successful executes objectives, lesson learned and value for money proposition
  • Manage I2S design works undertaken by different contractors within the delivery program
  • Coordinate design and assurance requirements to obtain necessary approvals.
  • Coordinate SME interaction with the works packages
  • Identify and manage engineering and design matters.
  • Contribute to and develop, when required, engineering design strategies, plans, standards and specifications and other available resources.
  • Manage and coordinate escalated events where necessary and resolve issues with the wider team.
  • Ensure Designs are coordinated with respect to inter-discipline and functional interface issues in a timely manner.
  • Ensure the delivery of safe and innovative designs that align with statutory and legislative requirements, construction and operational requirements and IRPL strategies, policies, plan and specifications.
  • Lead, manage and mentor the I2S Project Engineer/s to achieve Inland Rail’s design objectives for all aspects of the project.
  • Responding to relevant engineering RFIs
  • Liaise with relevant Government bodies on matters related to the technical interface of the project design.
  • Coordinate and manage design progress reporting.

About you

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate a high-level ability to lead and direct project design consultants to ensure designs are prioritised and delivered on time, to appropriate safety, quality and cost standards.

  • Degree in, engineering or equivalent from a recognised institution.
  • Competence certification including CPEng, RPEQ and RIW (or ability to obtain)
  • Experience in the management of design work for major rail infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in managing technical complexity in different delivery strategies
  • High level conceptual and analytical skills, with a demonstrated ability to analyse complex issues.
  • Good level of project management skills with the ability to manage complex rail infrastructure projects and interfaces.
  • Good understanding of Design and Engineering Assurance and Configuration Change Management.
  • Ability to coordinate and influence the performance of team members towards the achievement of project goals and principles.
  • High level of interpersonal and written and oral communications skills, with demonstrated ability to negotiate and influence outcomes with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Understanding of railway design and construction standards
  • Drivers license – class
