Inland Rail is a 1,600km freight rail line now under construction in Australia. Construction of Inland Rail has been divided into 12 sections, as detailed below.

Beveridge to Albury (Vic)

262km of existing track

This section involves enhancements at 12 sites to allow for safe clearance of double-stacked trains.

Albury to Illabo (NSW)

185km of existing track

This section involves enhancement and modification works at 20 sites that will allow for safe clearance of double-stacked freight trains.

Illabo to Stockinbingal (NSW)

37km of new track and 2km of upgraded track

‘Greenfield’ or new section of track that will create a direct route from Illabo, north to Stockinbingal, bypassing the winding Bethungra Spiral.

Stockinbingal to Parkes (NSW)

170km of existing track

The third section of Inland Rail to be completed, with works wrapped up in early 2026. Enhancement works at nine sites will enable double-stacked trains.

Parkes to Narromine (NSW)

98km of existing track and 5km of new track

This was the first section of Inland Rail to be completed and was commissioned in late 2020.

Narromine to Narrabri (NSW)

306km of new rail corridor and track

Inland Rail’s longest section of new track, completing one of the missing rail links between Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane.

Narrabri to North Star (NSW)

184km of upgraded track and 2km of new track

163km of this section was upgraded in late 2023 and is now operational. Design refinements are underway for the remaining 23kms.

North Star (NSW) to NSW/Qld Border

5km of new track and 25km of non-operational existing track

This section will link New South Wales and Queensland using existing rail corridor and new track, and connects to the NSW/Qld Border to Gowrie section at the Macintyre River.

NSW/Qld Border to Gowrie (Qld)

217km of new track

This section involves building 149km of new track and upgrading 68km of track from the NSW/Qld Border, near Yelarbon, to Gowrie Junction, north-west of Toowoomba.

Gowrie to Helidon (Qld)

28km of new dual gauge track

This section will traverse the steep terrain of the Toowoomba Range and includes a 6.2km tunnel.

Helidon to Calvert (Qld)

47km of new dual gauge track

This section connects Helidon (east of Toowoomba) with Calvert (west of Ipswich), in Queensland.

Plans include an 850m tunnel through the Little Liverpool Laidley Range.

Calvert to Kagaru (Qld)

53km of new dual gauge track within existing rail corridor

This section includes 39km of dual-gauge track allowing single-stacked operations between Kagaru and a proposed intermodal freight terminal at Ebenezer.

Will connect Inland Rail with the existing Sydney to Brisbane Coastal Line and the Port of Brisbane.
