The Inland Rail Program is a 1600km rail infrastructure project stretching from Brisbane to Melbourne incorporating new and existing rail track. The program includes the upgrading of existing standard gauge track, the enhancement of existing standard gauge track to cater for double stacking and the construction of new standard gauge links comprising of viaducts, tunnels, rail track, crossings and bridges. About the opportunity

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
Support the implementation of the strategic framework, key strategies, policies and procedures applicable to Inland Rail’s Environmental Management System and support environmental compliance for construction projects throughout procurement, detailed design, construction and commissioning of the A2P Projects. This role also involves supporting the Project Director, Principal Environment Advisor and IRPL delivery team in maintaining compliance, undertaking reporting for the delivery of the project, including maintenance of registers, collation of data, preparing reports and reviewing contractor reports.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee, ensure effective delivery of the relevant Project in accordance with IRPL processes, the Environmental Management System, relevant licenses and approvals.
  • Critically review all contractor and consultants’ recommendations to ensure accuracy and adequacy; implement recommendations and disseminate outcomes to relevant staff.
  • Support the Project Director and Principal Environment Advisor to ensure the delivery of effective environmental and sustainability policies, assessment of environmental impacts and the compliant and on target delivery of the Project.
  • Responsible for oversight of technical advice in the assessment and mitigation of environmental impacts and development of planning and environmental management strategies, documents and procedures.
  • Establish relationships with external stakeholders to establish and manage environment risk and approvals across the project.
  • Participate in environmental risks assessments and identification of relevant environmental trends.
  • Ensure Compliance through SAI 360 and is updated with all compliance related information for the project in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with and assist consultants, contractors and other staff to ensure that a consistent environmental approach is implemented on the Project
  • Oversee accuracy and credibility of appropriate planning and environmental registers including reporting, auditing and inspection of sites.
  • Provide specialist environmental advice to the Project teams to facilitate construction and achievement of environmental initiatives.

Other day-to-day tasks consistent with the role as assigned by relevant managers.

  • Maintain a sound knowledge of legislative, policy and procedure framework.
  • Ensure accuracy and credibility of appropriate planning and environmental registers including reporting, auditing and inspection of sites.
  • Contribute to a high performing team through active participation and engagement to share information and provide support, guidance and leadership.
  • Ensure appointed contractors comply with Inland Rail’s Environmental Management System (EMS) requirements, responsibilities, authorities and accountabilities.
  • Promote a safety culture within the team through active participation and engagement to share information and provide support, guidance and leadership.



About you

To ensure success in this position, applicants will be able to demonstrate:

Essential Selection Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or an environmentally related discipline.
  • Experience working as an on-site environmental specialist in the construction industry, preferably on large scale linear transport projects.
  • Proven knowledge of emerging trends, key benchmarks and statutory and regulatory requirements to inform best practice and value management outcomes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NSW and Federal environmental legislation including project approval process, environmental assessment, project modifications, consistency assessments.
  • Strong literacy with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and customised software packages.
  • Sound analysis and investigation skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Drivers Licence – Class C.

Desirable Selection Criteria:

  • Post graduate qualifications in Environmental Science or an environmentally related discipline.
  • Relevant experience in the major projects such as transport and logistics industry, infrastructure or utilities industry.
