The Inland Rail Program is a 1600km rail infrastructure project stretching from Brisbane to Melbourne incorporating new and existing rail track. The program includes the upgrading of existing standard gauge track, the enhancement of existing standard gauge track to cater for double stacking and the construction of new standard gauge links comprising of viaducts, tunnels, rail track, crossings and bridges. About the opportunity

The Sustainability Advisor will support the delivery of Inland Rail's sustainability goals by implementing sustainability initiatives, monitoring and reporting on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, and ensuring compliance with relevant sustainability frameworks and standards. You will work collaboratively across teams to integrate sustainable practices into project planning, delivery, and operations, driving positive environmental, social, and economic outcomes aligned with Inland Rail’s long-term objectives.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Actively manage the relationships with the contractor’s sustainability manager to ensure the sustainability outputs are fit for purpose and contribute to the achievement of the project’s sustainability objectives and targets.
  • Assist the contractor in the coordination of the Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating submission. This includes reviewing, providing constructive feedback, and supporting the contractor to finalise all project documentation for submission to ISC.
  • Promote a sustainability-focused culture on all projects through active engagement, education, and upskilling of project personnel on the ISC rating process.
  • Engage with the project team to highlight sustainability risks and opportunities during the design and construction process and documentation and propose strategies and activities to address these risks and opportunities.
  • Contribute to program wide sustainability initiatives (as directed) and lead engagement with required subject matter experts to deliver the initiatives. This includes drafting scope of works, working with commercial to procure services, onboarding SMEs, managing the engagement and deliverables and schedule management.
  • Deliver the project reporting requirements and contribute to the program reporting requirements

To ensure success in this position, applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Sustainability or another related field. Tertiary qualification in other fields related to the delivery of large-scale projects will be considered.
  • Infrastructure Sustainability Accredited Professional (V1.2 & V2.1) or the ability and willingness to obtain this qualification
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and customised software packages.
  • Sound analysis and investigation skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously.

Desirable Selection Criteria

  • Reviewing and developing technical submissions to external agencies.
  • Delivering outcomes in multidisciplinary teams on large-scale projects.
  • Working with civil contractors to achieve outcomes on large-scale projects.
  • Experience in design and / or construction of rail projects.
  • Experience using the Infrastructure Sustainability rating tools or other similar assessment and rating tools / processes.
  • Have submitted at least one rating submission to Infrastructure Sustainability Council as the Assessor.
  • Ability to influence and persuade internal and external stakeholders resulting in improved sustainability performance.
