The Parkes to Narromine section of Inland Rail is now operational.

The Parkes to Narromine project in the Central West of NSW is the first section of Inland Rail to be completed, with trains running on the line from late September 2020.

This project included two sections of work:

  • 98.4km of track upgrades
  • 5.3km of new track near Parkes, known as the North West Connection

The 98.4km stretch of existing rail track was completely rebuilt to improve transit times of the double-stacked trains that will be using this route.

These upgrades included:

  • replacing existing sleepers and track with concrete sleepers and new steel tracks
  • realigning the track to minimise tight curves
  • raising the level of the rail formation (the supportive foundations of the track)
  • replacing and upgrading culverts

As part of the project, we also built three new crossing loops and undertook works on level crossings, signalling and communications, signage, fencing, and services and utilities within the corridor.
