NSW/Qld Border to Gowrie Geotechnical investigations March 2025
In March 2025, geotechnical investigations are continuing in the Queensland Rail and local road corridors between the NSW/Queensland Border and Whetstone. Works will focus in the QR corridor west of Kurumbul and around the Yelarbon township. Geotechnical investigations help to determine ground conditions through several testing methods.
Work being done
Activities will include:
- Collection of soil samples and soil profiles from test pits dug by an excavator or backhoe
- Gathering core samples from bore holes and soil samples from shallow auger holes using drill rigs
- Testing soil properties using a penetrometer.
What can I expect?
- Mobile machinery and equipment operating in the Queensland Rail corridor
- Works will be between 6am and 6pm for 10 days followed by a four-day break
- Light and heavy vehicles with testing equipment travelling along the roadside, rail corridor and local roads
- A mobile site office will be located at an Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) owned property in the area
- Nearby residents may experience some noise during daylight hours
- If required, residents will be notified of any out of hours works that may impact them.
Machinery used
The machinery used on site may include:
- Light vehicles – 4WDs
- Heavy vehicles, including trailers and floats for transporting equipment
- Drill rigs (light and heavy vehicle mounted)
- Specialised sampling equipment, such as a penetrometer
- Excavator/backhoe (up to 14 tonne) for digging test pits.
How we're managing impacts
- Regular contact with impacted landowners to discuss site activity and any land access requirements
- Vehicles entering or leaving private property will be cleaned and inspected
- Traffic management will be in place to ensure safe access for all road users when needed.
Cancellation of works
Work can sometimes be cancelled or postponed at short notice due to weather or other factors.
We will let impacted residents know in advance if work is rescheduled.
