Girders delivered for Broadford’s new Marchbanks Road bridge
Inland Rail is replacing Marchbanks Road bridge in Broadford with a new higher structure to provide sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains.

The girders for Marchbanks Road bridge are transported from Tasmania arriving in Broadford in July. They crossed the new Short Street bridge before being delivered to the Marchbanks Road worksite.
In July the bridge girders were delivered to the Marchbanks Road site.
Fabricated by Haywards in Tasmania, the new bridge girders will be pre-assembled on site and installed as four beams and joined by more than 1,000 square metres of bridge deck.
Weighing about 600 tonnes, the new bridge will span 60 metres. It will be about 3.7 metres higher than the existing bridge and about 11 metres wider.
Eighty-nine main bridge piles will be drilled into the ground to provide a strong foundation, and 165 precast concrete structures will form the bridge walls and barriers.
Between August and October, the Marchbanks Road bridge will be closed, while we demolish the existing bridge and install the new structure.
