Single lane opens on new Marchbanks Road bridge after eight-week closure

Inland Rail has opened a single lane on the new Marchbanks Road bridge, enabling Broadford motorists to once again access the Hume Freeway via the new structure.

Opening the single lane shuttle flow allows motorists to use the new bridge while the remaining works are completed.

The old Marchbanks Road bridge across the rail corridor was demolished and its replacement built and partially opened in just eight weeks.

The new bridge is 3.7 metres higher and 11 metres wider than the former structure, allowing for Inland Rail to meet its objectives of operating double-stacked freight trains.

Short-term temporary bridge closures may be required from time-to-time to complete the final construction.

Marchbanks Road is the final bridge to be replaced as part of the Beveridge to Albury section of Inland Rail.

The bridge build means Inland Rail has now achieved the height and width clearances required for double-stacked freight trains at 11 of the 12 Beveridge to Albury project sites. Tallarook is the final site where modifications are required.

An Inland Rail spokesperson said:

“Opening the new Marchbanks Road bridge to single-lane shuttle-flow after just eight weeks is a major achievement for the project and the Broadford community.

“We thank the community for its patience and cooperation during the closure as crews worked safely and efficiently to restore this important connection.”
