New pedestrian underpass to provide connectivity across Benalla Station Precinct
Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the extended underpass and overpass options earlier this year. We clearly heard that an underpass is the preferred option, and we will now incorporate that into our next phase of design
September 26, 2022
During our engagement with community and stakeholders between April and June this year, we had many conversations at our shopfront, Benalla Farmers Market and Winton Hands-on Trades Day. Overall, people preferred the pedestrian underpass because it will provide better visual amenity and connectivity across the station precinct.
Feedback on the overpass option included concerns it was too intrusive, large and overbearing on the current landscape.
Community feedback is also helping inform designs for Benalla Station Precinct to allow double-stacked freight trains to pass safely through Benalla.
Last year, there was overwhelming community support to modify the Benalla Station Precinct instead of building a new higher road overpass.
We are now progressing plans for a track realignment, including relocating the eastern track to the western side of the station and removing the existing Benalla Station Approach Road overpass.
The plans also include building a new platform to access the new western track and upgrading pedestrian access to improve connectivity across the station precinct.
We are continuing to listen to your feedback and appreciate your positivity. We look forward to sharing the next phase of design, known as the reference design stage, with community in early 2023.
Construction is not scheduled to begin before 2024, so we still have plenty of time to work together.
We’re here and we’re listening, so let’s keep the conversation going. Our shopfront is open Wednesdays 10am-2pm at 53 Carrier Street, Benalla.
