Community support to retain and display Benalla Signal Hut artefacts
Feedback on the Benalla Signal Hut heritage interpretation options has shown community support to retain and display artefacts within the wider station precinct.
September 19, 2024
In July we sought feedback on the signal hut interpretation options via an online survey.
The top three heritage interpretation options were:
- Retention and display of artefacts (30%)
- Retention and adaptive reuse of salvaged materials (20%)
- Installation of a wall mural (16%)
The least preferred heritage interpretation option was for a new structure shelter, although the community did say they appreciated the physical appearance of the signal hut.
We will now consider this feedback as we progress designs in Benalla.
As the designs for Inland Rail have progressed, the Benalla Signal Hut must be removed as it conflicts with the future rail and pedestrian infrastructure planned for the area.
The options provided in the survey were drawn from the Benalla Signal Hut Heritage Interpretation Plan, which was developed by heritage specialists.
How the signal hut is interpreted will be decided based on a range of feedback sources including this survey.
