Inland Rail gears up for heavy lifting in Wangaratta
Inland Rail will ramp up preparations at the Green St bridge and Wangaratta railway station ahead of the track possession in mid-September.

A 650-tonne Superlift crawler crane with a 66-metre lattice boom, and two supporting cranes have arrived on site to assemble and install the Green St bridge structure.
Two 50-tonne main girders and 15 cross girders for the new bridge will be trucked to the site in the early hours of Tuesday, 3 September.
The two main girders will be assembled with the cross girders and the bridge structure will be lifted into place during the track possession on Saturday 14 September.
Wangaratta Railway Station (pictured) work in September will also include:
- Construction of the pedestrian underpass stairs, ramps and lift shafts
- Construction of the new western car park
- Connections and upgrades of electrical services
- Construction of the new western platform and canopy
- Drainage works
- Fire hydrant works and testing
The North East line will be closed from Saturday 14 September to Monday 16 September to carry out the work.
Coaches will replace trains for the entire journey between Southern Cross and Albury over the works period and passengers are advised to check the V/Line website for more information.
Ed Walker, Inland Rail Delivery Director Beveridge to Albury, said:
“In the next few weeks, the Wangaratta community will see some big changes in and around the station.
“A 650-tonne crane will be set-up onsite this week to assemble and install the Green St bridge structure.
“The main bridge girders are 32 metres long so it will take some planning to safely manoeuvre them through town and on to the site.
“We will set up some viewing sites for interested locals to watch the bridge being lifted in place during the possession.
“We thank the community for their patience and understanding as we push ahead with this important project.”
