Major work at Broadford’s Marchbanks Road during track possession
Inland Rail will carry out major works at Marchbanks Road in Broadford during the upcoming rail possession, with crews set to demolish the old bridge and install new girders over the rail corridor.

The works will be completed while trains are suspended from Saturday 12 to Tuesday 15 September, creating a safe window for construction crews to undertake critical activities in and around the rail corridor.
A new higher bridge is closely following the alignment of the current bridge and will provide the clearance for double stacked freight trains.
Four girders, fabricated by Haywards in Tasmania, will form the backbone of the bridge. Each girder spans more than 60 metres, and together they weigh 600 tonnes.
The new Marchbanks Road bridge will be 3.7 metres higher and 11 metres wider than the existing bridge and is expected to be open to traffic by mid-October with works ongoing until the end of the year.
Inland Rail and construction partner, John Holland will also use the track possession to complete work at other sites.
Level crossing upgrades will take place at Birkett Street, Euroa and Nunn Street, Benalla, and bridge deflection wall works will continue at Tallarook.
Track and drainage works will be undertaken at Short Street and Hamilton Street in Broadford and track safety barriers removed at Wandong.
An Inland Rail spokesperson said:
“The track possession provides an important opportunity to complete work safely without trains in operation.
“Demolishing the Marchbanks Road bridge and installing four new 60-metre-long girders in the one possession requires a lot of planning and coordination.
“Marchbanks Road is the last bridge to be demolished and rebuilt on the Beveridge to Albury project.
“We thank the community for their patience and cooperation as we carry out the work.”
