Inland Rail course will put graduates on the road to success

Fifteen local students are now primed and fully qualified for jobs in traffic management after completing a five-day course delivered by the Inland Rail Skills Academy and TAFE NSW at the Albury TAFE.

The course was aimed at First Nations community members in the Albury area, teaching students safe working practices, communicating in the workplace, implementing traffic management plans, and applying risk management processes. Successful graduates will receive a SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Work Training card for Traffic Controller, and Implement Traffic Control Plans, within 90 days of completion, enabling future employment as a traffic controller.

Effective traffic management is an essential component of the work Inland Rail carries out when conducting construction with our partners on the Inland Rail project. Some of the work being undertaken on Inland Rail requires modifications of, or access to public roads, where traffic controllers ensure safety for all road users.

Stephen Jones, Inland Rail Executive Director of Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability, said:

“Inland Rail is proud to work with TAFE NSW to create a pathway for the Albury region’s First Nations residents to gain employment in traffic control.
“We work hard to help create a learning environment which leads directly into safe and effective employment for people who attend Inland Rail Skills Academy courses.

“Traffic control plays an important role in rail infrastructure construction, and it is vital to the project’s success that this task is performed safely and to a high standard.

“It’s a clear demonstration of Inland Rail’s commitment to delivering strong opportunities for regional communities. The Inland Rail Skills Academy allows us to create opportunities for education, training, skills development, and employment.”

TAFE NSW Head Teacher Jamie Gardoll said:

“TAFE NSW are proud to work with Inland Rail to equip the workforce of the future. Students will learn a range of skills including how to set up, monitor, and control traffic flow effectively, ensuring safety for workers and the public.”
