About Inland Rail

The Inland Rail Program is a 1600km rail infrastructure project stretching from Brisbane to Melbourne incorporating new and existing rail track. The program includes the upgrading of existing standard gauge track, the enhancement of existing standard gauge track to cater for double stacking and the construction of new standard gauge links comprising of viaducts, tunnels, rail track, crossings and bridges. About the opportunity

Reporting to the Executive Director Program Health, Safety, Environment & Sustainability, this program leadership role will be supporting executive and senior leaders and teams in managing all elements of WHS and Rail Safety risks by applying Inland Rail’s safety management framework and ARTC's accredited safety management system (SMS).

Additionally, you will be responsible for developing strategies, policies, and procedures that ensure compliance with statutory obligations while fostering a contemporary safe work environment and meeting Inland Rail's objectives.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Providing effective leadership and management of the safety leaders in the delivery and development team, promoting a positive and constructive workplace culture that consistently delivers high quality services.
  • Providing operational and rail safety leadership, support and guidance to drive a consistent values-based culture and improved safety and environmental performance across the business.
  • Providing strategic advice to leaders in the Delivery Team on the implementation of the Inland Rail strategy to achieve no harm and to create safer workplaces and communities.
  • Implementing the HSE assurance framework.
  • Providing specialist safety advice and technical input to delivery, ensuring that legal and contractual obligations/risks are identified and communicated appropriately as per both the WHS and Rail Safety Legislation.
  • Monitor and report on progress and performance against agreed deliverables, safety & environment, and performance standards to ensure quality of outcomes, appropriate risk management and integration.

Critically important to this role is the ability to collaborate across the Inland Rail projects to ensure adequate resourcing, provide specialised advice, and drive continuous improvement in the safety management system.

About you

The successful candidate should have a track record proven in a major project and/or program management, with the ability to lead, organise and influence multidisciplinary teams. You should be able to demonstrate extensive practical experience working in a safety and environment management function with a strong understanding of WHS industry standards and best practices.  With strong leadership and stakeholder influencing skills you should be able to demonstrate prior development and implementation of operating models that ensure clear accountability.

Additionally, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Diploma) in occupational health & safety, engineering, environmental management risk or similar
  • Ability to see bigger strategic picture and drive through practically to execution, ensuring   collaboration and co-creation with key stakeholders throughout.
  • Highly developed communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in the development, management, and improvement of safety and environmental management systems
