Principal Environment Advisor - Gowrie to Kagaru

About the opportunity

Inland Rail is currently recruiting for a Principal Environment Advisor for the Gowrie to Kagaru (G2K) segment, responsible for leading the environmental strategy, approvals, and technical guidance for the Queensland component of its major freight infrastructure program. This role is based in Brisbane within the North of Narromine Project Development team, reporting directly to the Area Director G2K. The Principal Environment Advisor will also provide leadership to Environment Advisors within the team. This opportunity is a two year fixed term contract.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead environmental studies, assessments, and work scopes to support both program and project delivery in Queensland.
  • Develop environmental strategies, policies, processes, and plans aimed at achieving approvals and compliance outcomes.
  • Oversee the C2K Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and provide guidance across other G2K EIS activities.
  • Manage contractors, stakeholders, and regulators to secure approvals and ensure strong environmental performance.
  • Offer expert technical advice on environmental impacts, mitigation strategies, and planning/environment management approaches.
  • Support the integration of planning and environmental data into GIS platforms and provide guidance on statutory licenses and approvals.
  • Provide visible leadership to the Queensland environment team and contribute to the delivery of robust, defensible environmental outcomes.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with regulatory authorities, government agencies, contractors, and other key stakeholders.

About you

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Experience managing complex environmental issues, ideally within large or high-profile project environments.
  • Knowledge of Queensland and Commonwealth environmental legislation, including project approval processes.
  • Experience implementing and managing an Environmental Management System.
  • Ability to work effectively with senior leaders, multidisciplinary teams, and external stakeholders on complex environmental and policy matters.
  • Effective written communication, analytical skills, and stakeholder engagement capability.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and confidence working across relevant systems and reporting tools.
  • Possession of a Class C unrestricted driver’s license.
