Project Engineer

About the opportunity

As a Project Engineer on Inland Rail’s Gowrie to Kagaru (G2K) section, you’ll be part of the team responsible for shaping the project during its critical development phase where early decisions genuinely influence long-term outcomes. What you’ll be part of

Inland Rail is delivering a 1,600km freight rail corridor between Melbourne and Brisbane. The G2K section is a cornerstone of the Queensland delivery, involving multiple interfaces, stakeholders, and technical disciplines.

You’ll work client side, supporting the Project Manager and engaging with engineers, consultants, contractors, internal specialists and external stakeholder to progress planning, design, approvals, and readiness for delivery. This position is a two year fixed term contract.

 What you’ll be doing

  • Contribute to the engineering and technical development of a major rail infrastructure project.
  • Support project planning, scheduling, cost control, and performance reporting.
  • Work closely with consultants and service providers to resolve technical and interface issues.
  • Assist with contract administration, RFIs, variations, and payment claims.
  • Undertake site inspections and collaborate with engineers across disciplines.
  • Help monitor project progress against safety, program, budget, and quality KPIs.
  • Support alignment of the environmental approvals with the project design.
  • Play an active role in fostering a strong safety and environmental culture.
  • Build productive relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

What you’ll bring

You’re a capable, organised Project Engineer who enjoys working in structured but dynamic environments.

About you

  • A degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Eligibility for Engineers Australia membership.
  • Experience across engineering, construction, maintenance, or project delivery
  • Exposure to major infrastructure projects (rail experience valued but not essential).
  • Strong communication skills and a practical, solutions-focused mindset.

Desirable:

  • Experience in multi-disciplinary or client-side project environments.
  • Exposure to planning or development phases (approvals, reference design, procurement).
  • Familiarity with linear infrastructure or rail systems and standards.
