Senior Project Engineer Civil

Inland Rail (I2S Project)
Greenfield Delivery | FIFO 14:7 | Fixed Term to December 2027

We’re seeking an experienced Senior Project Engineer to join the Illabo to Stockinbingal (I2S) team—one of the most critical greenfield sections of Inland Rail. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to a nation-building project, delivering new rail infrastructure across regional NSW that will transform how freight moves across Australia.

Why this role matters
This isn’t a brownfield upgrade—it’s a true Greenfield delivery.
You’ll be part of constructing a new rail corridor across previously untouched terrain, solving complex engineering challenges from first principles, and shaping the legacy of Inland Rail for generations to come.
From earthworks and structures through to rail systems integration, this role will see you at the forefront of full lifecycle delivery, working closely with contractors, designers, and stakeholders to safely deliver a high-quality outcome.

About the opportunity
As a Senior Project Engineer, you will support the Project Manager(s) to deliver works safely, on time, within budget, and to specification, while taking a leadership role in technical decision-making, contractor engagement, and on-site delivery performance. We are seeking Senior Project Engineers with rail, road and/or bridge experience to cover all parts of the project.

Key responsibilities

  • Champion a safety-first culture, driving best practice across all site activities
  • Support planning, design development and construction delivery of the I2S Greenfield corridor
  • Work closely with Design & Engineering teams to resolve technical queries and drive fit-for-purpose, value-driven solutions
  • Lead and coordinate Project Engineers supporting contractor delivery activities
  • Review and validate scope, program, cost and safety inputs for contractor work packages
  • Proactively manage construction and engineering issues, including variations and compliance matters
  • Monitor and report on contractor performance, including safety observations and KPI delivery
  • Contribute to Project Management Plans and ensure alignment with ARTC & IRPL standards
  • Support contract administration including payment claims, variations and forecasting
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders across technical and delivery interfaces
  • Provide clear and concise reporting on project performance, risks and outcomes

About you

You will bring a combination of technical capability, strong communication skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

To be successful, you will have:

  • Degree in Engineering
  • Eligibility for membership with Engineers Australia
  • Experience across major infrastructure projects, ideally in a site-based delivery role
  • Demonstrated capability in civil, structures or track
  • Strong understanding of construction delivery, contracts and commercial drivers
  • Experience managing contractors and resolving complex on-site issues
  • Knowledge of rail safety legislation and WHS principles
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to operate in a structured, high-compliance project environment
  • Driver’s Licence (Class C)

What you’ll be joining

  • You will join one of the largest infrastructure programs in Australia.
  • This project will generate thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in local investment, boosting regional economies and communities right along the alignment.
  • Inland Rail is proud to have over 40% female representation and we would like to see these numbers grow.
  • Inland Rail is an Agile working environment in our State-of-the Art office embracing flexible working conditions.
