Junee Roundhouse Rail Museum celebrates 75 years with support from Inland Rail
Over the long weekend the Junee Roundhouse Rail Museum celebrated 75 years since its official opening with a three-day extravaganza, supported by the Australian Rail Track Corporation Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations program.
The Junee Roundhouse is the largest of the few surviving, working railway roundhouses in the Southern Hemisphere. The museum opened to the public at the end of 1947 and continues to display major exhibits to tourists and locals in southern New South Wales today.
The 75th anniversary celebrations spanned over three days of family fun, including the Kapooka Army Band playing each day, train rides from Junee Station, model railways and vintage cars on display, movies at the Athenium Theatre, and 1940s dress and suitcase races.
The event was free for the whole community to enjoy with plenty of food and drink stalls, and entertainment for the kids.
Inland Rail supported the promotion of the celebrations as part of the Community Sponsorships and Donations program.
Gail Commens, Chair of the Regional Heritage Transport Association, said:
“The event was a great success. It was three days of jam-packed action with over 4,000 attendees. It was fantastic to see the community turn out to celebrate the wonderful work of the Junee Roundhouse Museum.
“The museum is part of our national railway heritage, and it was very special for our community to come together to celebrate this important milestone.”
Stephen Jones, Inland Rail Director of Health, Safety and Environment said:
“We are proud to give back to the communities that are home to Inland Rail. The work these organisations do is instrumental to the wellbeing of regional communities.
“I encourage other non-profit groups to lodge their applications for the next round of funding.”
The Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations program offers funding between $1000–$4000 for organisations in eligible regional areas along the Inland Rail.
The funding supports organisations that contribute to local and regional prosperity, wellbeing, and sustainability.
Applications for the current round of funding close on 31 October 2022.
