The Edmondson Street bridge in Wagga Wagga will be temporarily closed from Saturday 22 November 2025 to begin a trial of traffic mitigation measures aimed at minimising disruption for local road users during the construction of the new bridge.
The trial will help confirm that the impacts to road users in Wagga Wagga align with those anticipated during project planning. To support this, a Temporary Traffic Monitoring Centre will be established, with representatives from Inland Rail, Martinus, Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW), Wagga Wagga City Council (WWCC), and emergency services actively monitoring network performance throughout the trial.

- A temporary new roundabout at MacLeay and Coleman Streets, restricted turning movements and traffic clearways will help to minimise any additional traffic congestion across the existing local road network during the closure period.
- Eight new traffic cameras at signalised intersections along Sturt Highway and trailer-mounted field cameras at other sites will provide greater visibility of real-time traffic flow
- Works notifications will be distributed to nearby residents and the broader community before these mitigations are installed.

Pedestrian detours
During the closure of Edmondson Street bridge, there will be no vehicle or pedestrian access.
To maintain connectivity, pedestrian detours will be in place via Cassidy footbridge and Mothers Bridge.
Following the trial and subject to approval, Edmondson Street bridge will be closed for approximately 18 months to allow for the demolition of the existing structure and construction of the new bridge.
We understand that these changes may lead to increased local traffic congestion in Wagga Wagga. Travel delays are expected to be around 10 minutes during peak periods.
We encourage the community to plan ahead now and consider travel plans including identifying alternate travel routes and times. This will help spread out any traffic congestion across the existing road network.
The project will continue to keep the Wagga Wagga community informed through our communication channels, supporting commuters as they adapt to the changes and adjust travel behaviours where needed.
We thank the Wagga Wagga community in advance for its continued patience while these traffic mitigations are in place.
Changes to bus services
To enable the Edmondson Street bridge to be closed there have been temporary changes to some school bus routes and timetables.
Parents are able to access revised routes and timetables on the TfNSW Trip Planner website and via the local bus company websites.
