Wagga Wagga
Inland Rail is a 1600km freight rail line connecting Melbourne and Brisbane that will transform how goods are moved around Australia.
In the Wagga Wagga area, we’re upgrading key infrastructure to support the operation of double-stacked freight trains.
This includes replacing the Edmondson Street bridge, the Cassidy and Wagga Wagga Station (Mothers Bridge) footbridges, and lowering the track under Pearson Street bridge. In addition, clearance works will be undertaken at the Wagga Wagga, Bomen and Uranquinty rail yards to provide the required horizontal and vertical space for these trains.
Edmondson Street bridge
In December 2025, Edmondson Street bridge in Wagga Wagga temporarily closed for approximately 18 months following approval of the successful traffic trial during November and December.
In January 2026 works commenced to demolish the Edmondson Street bridge including installing structural support walls, excavating bridge approach ramps and installing new bridge foundations. During the February 2026 track possession, the bridge was successfully demolished with the removal of the bridge deck, brick abutments and central pier.
During this 18-month period, our construction partner Martinus will demolish the old bridge and build a new, higher bridge that will allow double-stacked trains to safely pass underneath.
When construction is finished, the Wagga Wagga community will benefit from a modern, safer bridge with two lanes in each direction. It will also feature more accessible pedestrian footbridge on the eastern side, a new, wider footpath on the western side along with new anti-throw screens on both sides of the bridge to improve safety in the area.
To help minimise disruption and ensure access is maintained during bridge construction, changes to the local road network, pedestrian access and some bus routes introduced during the traffic trial will remain in place.
Mothers Bridge (Wagga Wagga Station footbridge)
In November 2025, the replacement of Mothers Bridge commenced with demolition works to remove the northern side access ramp.
A temporary ramp has been installed to retain pedestrian access during construction of the new bridge.
The new bridge will be higher and will include more accessible pedestrian ramps, anti-throw screens and handrails for enhanced safety and useability.
Mothers Bridge will be retained during part of the construction period but will be accessed on the station side by an alternative temporary access ramp. This temporary access at Mothers Bridge will facilitate construction of the new crossing.
Cassidy footbridge
The new bridge will be higher and will include new accessible ramps, anti-throw screens and handrails for enhanced safety and useability.
Cassidy footbridge will be replaced by a temporary bridge while the new footbridge is constructed.
Pearson Street bridge
We will lower approximately 400m of the track to a maximum depth of 1.5m under the Pearson Street bridge. This will not change the current rail regional flood immunity.
Wagga Wagga Yard

The Main Line will be slewed away from the Platform line to ensure the necessary clearances at Wagga Wagga Station and the platform awning. Two turnouts to the sidings will be removed from the Mainline.
An existing steel signal gantry and adjoining signalling infrastructure will be modified to allow for vertical clearance for double-stacked trains.
Bomen Yard

To allow trains to pass each other safely the Main Line and the Loop line will be slewed. Dampier Street Level Crossing, which is currently non-operational, will be removed.
Uranquinty Yard

The Main Line will be slewed to allow for horizontal clearance for double-stacked trains.
