Work being done

The works include tree and vegetation removal and the demolition of the former Country Fire Authority (CFA) building at 51 Ferguson Street, which is required to enable large cranes and other machinery to operate on the site.

Investigation works

  • Surveying the railway track, road and pavement levels at multiple locations
  • Locating and mapping underground services.

Site establishment works at 51 Ferguson Street

  • A project worksite, where worker facilities, plant and material will be located will be established on land at 51 Ferguson Street
  • Works at this site will include:
    • demolishing the former CFA building and disconnecting utilities
    • approved tree and vegetation removal
    • building and compressing a hardstand to provide a firm and solid surface
    • boundary fencing erected and portable shed installed.
  • Generators will be used until a power supply is connected to site
  • Due to the limited space available to undertake major construction activities, tree and vegetation removal is required at the former CFA site, within the rail corridor and at several locations within the road reserves.

What can I expect?

  • Works 7am-6pm Monday to Friday and 7am-1pm Saturdays
  • Traffic management will be required in some locations where works are occurring close to roads
  • To ensure the safety of drivers and workers, Hamilton Street bridge will be reduced to a single lane with shuttle-flow during the tree and vegetation removal. Please observe all traffic management instructions and signage
  • Temporary pedestrian detour via the Broadford Station pedestrian crossing will be in place during tree and vegetation removal
  • Reduced speed limits of 40km/h near works
  • These works are expected to generate medium levels of noise with some high levels of noise at times. Nearby residents may notice some vibration
  • Nearby residents can expect some additional construction workers and vehicles in the area.

Machinery used

Non-destructive digging truck, excavators, tipper trucks, cranes, support vehicles, compaction rollers, loaders, graders, workers using hand tools and survey equipment, traffic management equipment and signage.

How we're managing impacts

  • Traffic management and reduced road speeds
  • An arborist will assess all trees before removal
  • All areas will be inspected by a qualified wildlife handler for wildlife before tree removal works commence. If fauna is encountered, works will cease until a wildlife handler has safely relocated the animal.
  • Securing and purchasing biodiversity offsets
  • Landscaping plans have been developed to reinstate the Hamilton Street precinct and replace removed trees.

Cancellation of works

Works can sometimes be cancelled at short notice depending on weather and other factors. Should this occur, works will be rescheduled.
