Traffic changes and bridge works, Hamilton Street, Broadford May 2025
To safely undertake works to upgrade the Hamilton Street bridge, changes to traffic conditions will commence in May. This will include a lane closure with single lane shuttle flow across the bridge and some detours on nearby roads.
Work being done
Construction of the new shared use path (SUP) will start in late May. This includes building the foundations and bridge abutments for the new SUP on either side of the rail line.
Ground investigations, surveys, vegetation removal, utility relocations and site establishment works will also continue around Hamilton Street throughout May.
Lane closure and additional traffic management
- A lane closure, with access maintained via shuttle flow across Hamilton Street bridge, will start in mid-May
- To reduce congestion, there will be additional changes to traffic conditions including:
- installation of a temporary roundabout at the intersection of Hamilton and Hawdon streets
- southbound traffic will access the bridge via the High Street service lane only
- a pedestrian detour will be in place via the Broadford train station.
Refer to map of road and pedestrian changes below.
Site establishment works at 51 Ferguson Street
- Works will continue at 51 Ferguson Street to build a project worksite, where worker facilities, plant and material will be located
- Works include constructing a hardstand to provide a firm and solid surface and installing boundary fences and portable sheds
- Generators will be used until a power supply is connected to the site.
Utility relocation works
- Relocation of services via excavation, trenching and backfilling
- All impacted residents will be contacted by their service provider.
SUP foundation and abutment works
- To provide a stable works area, piling pads will be constructed by compacting the ground near each abutment
- A piling rig will drill shafts filled with steel and concrete to form the foundations.
Service investigations, surveys and vegetation removal
- Previously notified works including service mapping, ground surveys and vegetation removal will continue in May at various locations.
What can I expect?
- Works 7am-6pm Monday to Friday and 7am-1pm Saturdays
- Extended work hours Monday 26 May between 4.30am-7.30pm. Impacted residents will be contact prior
- Traffic management and a pedestrian detour will be required in some locations where work is occurring close to roads
- Reduced speed limits of 40km/h near works
- Works are expected to generate medium levels of noise with occasional high levels of noise. Nearby residents may notice some vibration during works to compact the ground.
Machinery used
Non-destructive digging truck, excavators, tipper trucks, cranes, piling rigs, support vehicles, compaction rollers, loaders, graders, concrete trucks, workers using hand tools and survey equipment, traffic management equipment and signage.
How we're managing impacts
- Traffic management and reduced road speeds
- Environmental controls in place for noise, dust and vibration
- An arborist and qualified wildlife handler will assess all trees before removal. If fauna is encountered, works will cease and animals safely relocated.
Cancellation of works
Works can sometimes be cancelled at short notice depending on weather and other factors. Should this occur, works will be rescheduled.
