Inland Rail to deliver its largest track possession works in Victoria
The Inland Rail Beveridge to Albury project will undertake its largest scope of works in a track possession when the Albury line is suspended for four days early next month.
April 23, 2026
During the Australian Rail Track Corporation 86-hour super possession (2-5 May), Inland Rail and construction partner John Holland will carry out major rail and construction works at eight Victorian project sites from Wandong to Benalla.
Inland Rail will also take advantage of a 28-day V/Line possession (28 April – 26 May) on the Shepparton line to conduct additional works at Wandong, Broadford, Tallarook and Seymour.
Coaches will replace trains on the Albury line from 20 April until 5 May.
During the super possession, the old Broadford–Wandong Road bridge will be demolished at Wandong, while protective screens to prevent items falling on the tracks below will be installed on Broadford’s Hamilton Street bridge.
Major track works will take place under Broadford’s Short Street bridge, where both ARTC and V/Line tracks will be removed, lowered and rebuilt, alongside the installation of new track drainage.
Nearby at the Marchbanks Road bridge, piling and retaining wall works will progress in preparation for the construction of a new bridge later this year.
Under the Hume Freeway at Tallarook, ARTC and V/Line tracks will be removed, lowered and rebuilt, with new track drainage installed and bridge strengthening works carried out.
Similar track removal, lowering and rebuild works, along with drainage installation, will take place under the Hume Freeway at Seymour.
Further north at Euroa, the station upgrade will continue with construction of the new platforms.
The ongoing work to transform the Benalla railway precinct will focus on the construction of the new west track and platform, utility and drainage installations and civil, track and signalling works at Nunn Street level crossing.
Crews will work around the clock, with traffic changes in place including road closures, traffic management, local detours, and ongoing heavy vehicle movements.
An Inland Rail spokesperson said:
“The scope of work in the upcoming track possession is the largest we have undertaken in a single rail possession.
“With train services suspended, all eight sites will become centres of high activity as we carry out important construction work.
“We understand that these works will have an impact on the local community, so we thank them for their patience and cooperation.”
