Benalla’s new light and bright underpass takes shape

Eleven days of around-the-clock works saw a major transformation of Benalla Station precinct in September.

Our construction partner, John Holland, finished the north section of the pedestrian underpass, installed 33 sheet piles, completed more than 600 metres of drainage and laid 1300 metres of track.

These works are critical to upgrading the Benalla Station precinct to allow sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains to use the line.

A crane lifts a concrete platform into place at a railway side workplace at Benalla in Victoria, part of Inland Rail works.

The first base pieces of the new pedestrian underpass at Benalla Station are laid during the September 2025 possession.

Planned works for October include:

  • Ongoing construction of the new pedestrian underpass
  • Utility investigations in Mackellar Street and Railway Place in preparation for relocation works
  • Construction and formation of new rail track and track drainage.

Work will be undertaken between 7am-6pm Monday to Friday and 7am-1pm Saturdays.

Extended work hours will occur on Monday 27 October between 4am and 8pm.
