The Inland Rail Program is a 1600km rail infrastructure project stretching from Brisbane to Melbourne incorporating new and existing rail track. The program includes the upgrading of existing standard gauge track, the enhancement of existing standard gauge track to cater for double stacking and the construction of new standard gauge links comprising of viaducts, tunnels, rail track, crossings and bridges. About the opportunity

As our Project Accountant, you’ll be the financial link between Inland Rail’s Finance, Project Controls, and Delivery teams. You’ll ensure the accuracy of project transactions, deliver high-quality financial reporting, and provide insightful analysis to support decision-making. This role also contributes to corporate compliance activities such as payroll allocations, asset capitalisation, and contract data management ensuring alignment with financial governance standards.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the end-to-end monthly reporting cycle, including accruals, transfer journals, scope changes, forecasts and budget updates.
  • Ensure timely closure of Actual Cost of Work Performed (ACWP) and forecasts in line with Inland Rail reporting timetables.
  • Highlight key movements and ensure forecasts align with project delivery schedules.
  • Deliver accounting and transactional support to project and functional managers, ensuring alignment with budgets and financial governance.
  • Maintain compliance with Australian accounting standards and support audit processes.
  • Assist in the close-out of completed project stages or work packages and hand over to operations.
  • Build and maintain meaningful respectful working relationships across teams to support collaboration and shared success.

About You

You’re a detail-oriented and proactive finance professional who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. You bring strong analytical skills, a commitment to accuracy, and a passion for infrastructure delivery.

To ensure success in this position, applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Tertiary qualifications in accounting or business-related discipline, membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants or the Australian Society of CPA’s or National Institute of Accountants or proven relevant experience.
  • Experience in the management accounting, budget, forecast and cost functions of a commercial organisation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills coupled with the ability to foster relationships.
  • A collaborative mindset with attention to detail.
  • Extensive knowledge of spreadsheets and large automated accounting systems.
  • Attention to detail.

Desirable Selection Criteria

  • Sound knowledge of and experience with Prism and CiA Financials or other similar financial information systems.
  • Exposure to major infrastructure projects.
  • Management performance reporting experience.
