About the traffic trial
Inland Rail is progressing plans for a trial closure of Edmondson Street bridge from Saturday 22 November 2025 (subject to approval).
The map below shows the extent of the closure and the immediate detours surrounding the site. Further details on recommended travel routes through the local road network will be provided in due course.
To prepare for the trial closure, changes to the local road network will occur in October and November. These changes will help improve traffic flow across the existing road network during the closure.
The first change the community will see will be trailer-mounted field cameras placed in key locations to collect real-time travel data on key routes. This will help us understand impacts once Edmondson Street is closed. Additionally, eight new cameras are installed at key signalised intersections along the Sturt Highway to ensure visibility of the road network.
The project will progressively install a new roundabout, restricted turning movements and traffic clearways to help improve traffic flow across the existing road network during the closure. Works notifications will be distributed to nearby residents and the broader community before these mitigations are installed.
The trial will help confirm that the impacts to road users in Wagga Wagga align with those anticipated during project planning. To support this, a Temporary Traffic Monitoring Centre will be established, with representatives from Inland Rail, Martinus, Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW), Wagga Wagga City Council (WWCC), and emergency services actively monitoring network performance throughout the trial.
Following the trial and subject to approval, Edmondson Street bridge will be closed for approximately 18 months to allow for the demolition of the existing structure and construction of the new bridge.
We understand that these changes may lead to increased local traffic congestion in Wagga Wagga. Travel delays are expected to be around 10 minutes during peak periods.
We encourage the community to plan ahead now and consider travel plans including identifying alternate travel routes and times. This will help spread out any traffic congestion across the existing road network.
The project will continue to keep the Wagga Wagga community informed through our communication channels, supporting commuters as they adapt to the changes and adjust travel behaviours where needed.
We thank the Wagga Wagga community in advance for its continued patience while these traffic mitigations are in place.

Changes to bus services
To enable the Edmondson Street bridge to be closed there will be temporary changes to school bus routes and timetables. .
Inland Rail is working with local bus companies and TfNSW to finalise these temporary changes.
Parents will be able to access revised routes and timetables from 27 October 2025 on the TfNSW Trip Planner website, the local bus company websites and the Inland Rail website. Individual meetings with schools are being arranged from the beginning of Term 4 to ensure they are prepared for the upcoming changes.
School buses will start using the new routes from Monday 10 November to ensure that students and schools can adjust to these changes prior to the trial Edmonson Street closure on 22 November 2025.
