Works and planning
The Beveridge to Albury project spans from north of Melbourne to the VIC/NSW border at Albury-Wodonga.
This section of track needs to be modified to provide sufficient height and width clearances to allow double-stacked trains to use the line.
Work will be completed at 12 sites along the North East rail line, which runs mostly along the Hume Freeway, from the Murray River at Wodonga to Beveridge.
Work will be delivered in two parts, called ‘tranches’.
Tranche 1: in construction
McConnell Dowell was announced in October 2022 as the construction partner for Beveridge to Albury Tranche 1 works.
These works include:
- replacing the Beaconsfield Parade bridge at Glenrowan
- lowering the tracks under the Murray Valley Highway bridge at Barnawartha North
- relocating the existing track and platform on the eastern side of the Wangaratta Station to the western side of the station
- removing the two Wangaratta Station footbridges and replacing them with a single pedestrian underpass
- lowering the tracks and replacing the Green Street bridge at Wangaratta
- replacing the Seymour-Avenel Road bridge at Seymour
- relocating tracks (tracks slews), raising signal gantries and modifying overhead powerlines in numerous areas along the rail line

We work closely with agencies and others to get it right
The work we do in the Beveridge to Albury section will affect roads, bridges and other assets managed by Department of Transport and Planning and Councils.
When complete, trains travelling on the Inland Rail network will share the rail corridor with V/Line’s passenger operations, the Sydney-Melbourne XPT, and suburban trains closer to Melbourne.
We continue to work closely with these key stakeholders, councils and Victorian government agencies to understand their operations and requirements.
