Wangaratta
Inland Rail is a 1600km freight rail line connecting Melbourne and Brisbane that will transform how goods are moved around Australia.
In Victoria we’re upgrading 262km of existing rail line between Beveridge and Albury at 12 sites, including Wangaratta, to allow double-stacked freight trains to pass safely and ensure everyday products can be delivered faster and more reliably.

At Wangaratta we’re modifying the station precinct and replacing Green Street bridge to allow sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains to use the line.
There are two locations in Wangaratta where we will be working:
Work includes:
- removing the two Wangaratta Station footbridges and replacing them with a single pedestrian underpass
- relocating the existing track and platform on the eastern side of Wangaratta Station, so it sits parallel to the current track on the western side of the station
- lowering the tracks and replacing the Green Street bridge in the same location on the same alignment.

Wangaratta Station Precinct
Construction to modify the Wangaratta Station Precinct started in 2023.
Feedback from community, stakeholders and technical specialists has helped inform the design.
We heard safety, accessibility and connectivity was important to you we’ve incorporated these improvements into the final design.
Based on your feedback the final design includes:
- a pedestrian underpass that will be light, bright and safe with clear lines of sight from each end
- improved access across the station precinct with ramps and lifts
- restored connectivity between the station and Norton Street by removing “The Dive” and creating community spaces
- new car parks
- improvements across the broader station precinct that respects the heritage values of the area.

Green Street bridge, Wangaratta
We’ve replaced Green Street bridge to provide sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains
To allow the safe running of double-stacked freight trains we’ve lowered the rail line by 2.8 metres, removed the central pier of the old bridge, realigned the tracks and replaced the Green Street bridge in the same location.
The new bridge structure is made up of two 50-tonne main girders, 3-tonne cross girders and 50 concrete transfloor sections.
The bridge opened to traffic in late 2024.
