Works notifications and environmental investigations

Inland Rail’s Narromine to Narrabri section is part of the 1,600km fast freight rail line that will connect Melbourne to Brisbane.

It is Inland Rail’s longest section of track and will involve constructing 306km of brand new rail corridor.

To help us plan, design and construct Inland Rail, we complete extensive field studies and site investigations to understand relevant environmental features, technical challenges and opportunities. This also ensures our regulatory requirements are met by minimising and adequately mitigating impacts to the environment.

Our work is not possible without the continued support and proactive collaboration from alignment landowners. We appreciate and value their commitment to progressing Inland Rail in the central west.

Environmental investigations include:

  • geotechnical and ecological surveys – to gather information about soil, ecological habitats and communities
  • hydrology studies – to examine historical and predicted flooding and surface water movements
  • noise, air quality and vibration surveys – to measure current levels at key project sites and assess the operational levels across the entire alignment
  • surface water and groundwater baseline studies
  • utility identification surveys – to identify infrastructure such as electrical, gas and water pipelines
  • traffic surveys – to establish existing vehicle class, movements and volumes on local roads and highways
  • land and heritage surveys – to identify property boundaries and investigate any evidence of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artefacts and heritage.
