Edmondson Street bridge trial closure begins tomorrow night

The Edmondson Street bridge in Wagga Wagga will be closed from tomorrow night (22 November, 2025) to begin a trial of traffic mitigation measures ahead of the construction of a new bridge which will bring improved safety, accessibility, connectivity and visual amenity to the community.

Following the trial, Wagga Wagga City Council, Transport for NSW, the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Inland Rail and Martinus will collectively determine whether the bridge will remain closed for eighteen months, allowing Inland Rail to build a new bridge to accommodate double-stacked trains.

Throughout the trial closure, live traffic data will be monitored with additional adjustments to the road network implemented as needed to help manage congestion during peak periods.

Feedback from local schools, bus companies, emergency services, and the community will be considered in evaluating the performance of the trial.

Traffic mitigation measures are now in place across Wagga Wagga, including a temporary roundabout at the intersection of Macleay and Coleman Streets, traffic monitoring cameras, lane separating devices, turning and parking restrictions, and signage around town.

Changes to bus routes and timetables are now in effect, with updated routes are available to view on the Transport for NSW Trip Planner website.

For up-to-date information, and to view a video and interactive map highlighting the traffic changes, visit the Inland Rail website.

Wagga Wagga residents can ask questions and provide their feedback on the traffic mitigation measures by calling the community hotline on 1800 732 761.

Residents can also speak to Inland Rail representatives at the following community drop-in sessions:

Ed Walker, Inland Rail Acting Chief Operating Officer, said:

“To support the trial, a temporary Traffic Monitoring Centre has been set up, bringing together representatives from Inland Rail, Martinus, Wagga Wagga City Council, Transport for NSW, the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure and local emergency services. The team will be actively monitoring live traffic conditions and adjusting mitigations as needed.

“To help keep traffic moving, we encourage you to plan your trip, allow a little extra time, and, if possible, travel outside the morning and afternoon peak periods.

“You can speak to the Inland Rail team with any questions or feedback at one of our upcoming community drop-in sessions in Wagga Wagga and surrounding suburbs.

“We thank the Wagga Wagga community again for your patience and support as we implement the Edmondson Street bridge closure.”
