Edmondson Street bridge trial closure to begin this weekend

The Edmondson Street bridge in Wagga Wagga will be closed from the evening of this Saturday 22 November to begin a trial of traffic mitigation measures aimed at minimising disruption for local road users during the construction of the new bridge.

Following the trial, Wagga Wagga City Council, Transport for NSW, Inland Rail and Martinus Rail will collectively determine whether the bridge will remain closed for eighteen months, allowing Inland Rail to build a new, safer bridge that will accommodate double-stacked trains.

Throughout the trial closure, live traffic data will be monitored with additional adjustments to the road network implemented as needed to help manage congestion during peak periods.

Feedback from local schools, bus companies, emergency services, and the community will be considered in evaluating the performance of the trial.

The rollout of traffic mitigation measures across Wagga Wagga has already commenced, including the installation of traffic monitoring cameras, VMS boards, and turning and parking changes.

This week, a temporary roundabout will be installed at the intersection of Macleay and Coleman Streets, as well as further signage, lane separating devices, and line markings implemented around town.

Changes to bus routes and timetables are now in effect, with updated routes are available to view on the Transport for NSW Trip Planner website.

For up-to-date information on detours, traffic changes, and to view an interactive map highlighting traffic mitigations, visit the Inland Rail website.

Wagga Wagga residents can ask questions and provide their feedback on the traffic mitigation measures by calling the community hotline on 1800 732 761.

Residents can also speak to Inland Rail representatives at community drop-in sessions.

James Kennedy, Inland Rail Delivery Director, Albury to Parkes, said:

We thank the Wagga Wagga community for your patience and support as we prepare for the Edmondson Street bridge closure.

To help keep traffic moving, we encourage you to plan your trip, allow a little extra time, and, if possible, travel outside the morning and afternoon peak periods.

We’ve put measures in place to reduce congestion, including a temporary roundabout at MacLeay and Coleman Streets, changes to turning movements, and updated parking arrangements across the local road network.

Once the new bridge is complete, you’ll see real improvements: a more accessible pedestrian footbridge on the eastern side, a wider footpath on the western side, and anti-throw screens on both sides to make the area safer for everyone.
