Edmondson Street bridge to remain closed ahead of Inland Rail construction
The Edmondson Street bridge in Wagga Wagga will remain closed for an estimated eighteen months following a successful two-week trial of traffic mitigation measures from Saturday 22 November. This closure will enable Inland Rail to construct a new bridge to accommodate double-stacked trains.

The full closure of the bridge has now been approved by Wagga Wagga City Council and allows for the demolition and construction of a new bridge which will bring improved safety, accessibility, connectivity and visual amenity to the community.
Throughout the traffic trial, traffic movements have flowed as expected and remained within the forecast range. Feedback has been received from emergency services, bus operators, schools and the broader community and has also indicated that the trial was effective.
A temporary Traffic Monitoring Centre was established, bringing together representatives from Inland Rail, Martinus, Wagga Wagga City Council, Transport for NSW, the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure and local emergency services. This team will continue to monitor live traffic conditions throughout the closure period.
Community feedback has been gathered through Inland Rail drop-in sessions in Wagga Wagga and surrounding suburbs. Sentiment toward the traffic mitigation measures has been positive, with only a small number of complaints received.
The existing bridge will be removed during a scheduled track possession weekend in the first quarter of next year, when trains are not operating.
Construction crews will now complete several key activities so the bridge can be demolished. This month, works will be undertaken on the installation of structural support walls, a water pipeline and construction fencing.
In January, the bridge approach ramps will be excavated, new bridge foundations installed, and utilities connected along Edmondson Street.

Ed Walker, Inland Rail Acting Chief Operating Officer, said:
“We thank the Wagga Wagga community for their patience and support throughout the traffic trial, and as we move into the full closure of the Edmondson Street bridge.
“It’s encouraging to see the network performing well, and we will continue to monitor traffic to ensure the best outcomes for road users.
“This new bridge represents a major investment in Wagga Wagga’s transport network, delivering safer, more reliable access for both road users and pedestrians for decades to come.
“During the construction, we encourage everyone to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and, where possible, travel outside the morning and afternoon peak periods to help keep traffic moving.”
