Inland Rail’s ‘super possession’ a success in Victoria

Five additional Inland Rail sites at Wandong, Short Street - Broadford, Seymour, Euroa and Benalla can now accommodate double-stacked freight trains after the latest 86-hour ‘super possession’ was completed in Victoria.

Working around the clock from Saturday 2 May to Tuesday 5 May as part of Inland Rail’s largest possession, our crews demolished the old Broadford–Wandong Road bridge at Wandong and removed 650 tonnes of rubble from the site.

At Short Street in Broadford, an 815-metre section of Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) and V/Line tracks was removed and lowered, with the ARTC track rebuilt beneath the new bridge. This involved 80 trucks operating non-stop to move more than 85,000 tonnes of material and ballast between the Inland Rail site office on High Street and the rail corridor.

Under the Hume Freeway at Tallarook, crews removed, lowered and realigned a 3km section of ARTC and V/Line tracks, moved 64,000 tonnes of material and ballast, rebuilt the ARTC track and continued structural upgrade works around the Hume Freeway bridge piers and abutments.

A further 1.8km section of ARTC and V/Line tracks were removed, lowered, realigned and the ARTC track rebuilt beneath the Hume Freeway at Seymour. This saw 34,000 tonnes of material and ballast moved.

Inland Rail is using the extended V/Line track possession on the Shepparton line to continue related work at Wandong, BroadfordTallarook and Seymour, including completing the rebuild of V/Line tracks.

Construction of new station platforms forged ahead at Euroa, while at Benalla work continued on the Nunn Street level crossing reconstruction, utilities and drainage installation, and the new east and west tracks and platforms.

Nearly 600 workers operated in around the clock shifts to complete these works.

The Beveridge to Albury section will be ready for full double-stacked operation later in the year when the Marchbanks Road bridge in Broadford is demolished and replaced with a higher bridge and further track lowering is completed at Tallarook .

Of the Beveridge to Albury section’s 12 project sites, 10 now have the height and width clearances required for double‑stacked freight trains.
