Seymour
Inland Rail is a 1600km freight rail line connecting Melbourne and Brisbane that will transform how goods are moved around Australia.
In Victoria we’re upgrading 262km of existing rail line between Beveridge and Albury at 12 sites, including two in the Seymour area, to allow double-stacked freight trains to pass safely and ensure everyday products can be delivered faster and more reliably.

There are two bridges in the Seymour area where there is not enough clearance for double-stacked freight trains to use the line:
- The Seymour-Avenel Road bridge is being replaced with a new, higher bridge, in the same location.
- The tracks under the Hume Freeway bridge near Seymour are being lowered.

Seymour-Avenel Road bridge, Seymour
At Seymour-Avenel Road we’re replacing the existing bridge with a higher bridge in the same location to allow sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains pass safely.
The design includes a 35 metre span bridge, about 3.2 metres higher than the existing structure and incorporates earth embankments sympathetic to the surrounding environment and retaining walls to reduce impact on Avenel Road.
Building a bridge in the same location reduces our impact on the environment.
Where vegetation removal is required, we are complying with the relevant Victorian and Australian Government approval conditions.
Road closures are required during construction which will result in some traffic disruption. A temporary access road has been constructed to allow continued access to Granville Drive during construction.

Keep informed
Throughout construction we will provide updates to community and stakeholders and continue meeting with our nearest neighbours to share project information.
You can talk with our team and McConnell Dowell by visiting us at our regular drop-in events.
During construction, the Seymour-Avenel Road bridge will be closed with a detour in place.
Digital signage will provide the latest updates. Vehicles will be detoured via Avenel Road and High Street during this time.
What’s next?
Construction is underway and is expected to be completed in 2025.
Hume Freeway bridge, Seymour
At the Hume Freeway bridge, Seymour, we plan to lower the track by up to two metres at the lowest point under the bridge.
Lowering works will be done on both approaches to provide a gradual decline.
We don’t expect this work will have a large impact on the community, but we’ll continue to share information as the designs progress.
In June 2024 we appointed John Holland as our construction contractor.
Next steps are to complete site investigations and early works, finalise the design and start construction from 2025.
