Inland Rail will undertake track slew and rail bridge upgrade works within the rail corridor adjacent to Seymour-Avenel Road.

Work being done

McConnell Dowell will undertake track slew and rail bridge upgrade works within the rail corridor adjacent to Seymour-Avenel Road between the Hume Freeway and Hanleys Lane, to create the horizontal clearance required for double-stacked freight trains.

Track slewing involves unclipping and cutting the existing rail track, moving the track horizontally and rebuilding the relocated rail sections. The rail bridge works will involve widening and strengthening one bridge and replacing the structure of another.

Works include:

  • Preparatory works and approved vegetation removal
  • Remove rail and bridge infrastructure
  • Install new and upgrade existing bridge structures
  • Reinstate rail infrastructure
  • Welding, tamping and track assessment.

What can I expect?

  • Construction work 7am-6pm Monday to Friday, and weekends 7am-5pm
  • 60 hours of round-the-clock works, 14-16 September, including throughout the night
  • Construction noise during daylight hours, with mitigation measures in place
  • Construction noise during night works on 14-15 September
  • Trucks and other vehicles entering and exiting the construction site, may cause minor traffic delays
  • Approved vegetation removal in the project area
  • Heavy machinery and equipment operating onsite
  • Delivery of materials and equipment.

Machinery used

  • Heavy and light vehicles including trucks, cranes, loaders, excavators, tipper trucks, 3t telehandler and tamper will be used within the works area
  • Hand tools such as magnetic drills, concrete saws, rattle guns, rail saws and welding equipment.

How we’re managing impacts

  • Water carts will be onsite to wet down areas to assist in managing dust
  • Traffic management will be in place to ensure safe access for all road users where required
  • Environmental controls in place.
