Junee

Inland Rail is a 1600km freight rail line connecting Melbourne and Brisbane that will transform how goods are moved around Australia.

We’re upgrading 185km of existing rail track between Albury and Illabo at 24 sites, including six within the Junee LGA, to allow double-stacked freight trains to pass safely and ensure everyday products can be delivered faster and more reliably.

Kemp Street bridge

We will replace the Kemp Street bridge with a new bridge in the existing location. The bridge will be 2.5m higher and is designed to incorporate a pedestrian footbridge, that meets disability access criteria, on the northern side.

On Friday 5 September 2025, Kemp Street bridge in Junee was temporarily closed for approximately 18 months while we build a new, higher bridge that will allow double-stacked trains to safely pass underneath.

During the September 2025 track possession Kemp Street bridge was successfully demolished. Our contractor Martinus removed concrete between spans and cut the steel structure, allowing the deck to be craned out in sections and lowered for removal.

To help minimise disruption and ensure access is maintained, transport services will be available throughout the closure.

Junee Olympic Highway

The design modification at the Olympic Highway underbridge includes track slews on the Down and Up Main lines, this will create the necessary horizontal clearance for double-stacked freight trains on the Inland Rail alignment over the Olympic Highway.

Trains will be able to pass safely in opposite directions north of the town, at the Inland Rail passing loop in Illabo.

Inland Rail is also working with the rail operators to implement alternate driver change facilities either side of the station. This proposal, in conjunction with existing passing loops north and south of the town, will ensure that driver change operations do not block the Junee-central level crossing.

Junee to Illabo

We’re upgrading an 18km dual-track corridor between Junee and Illabo to accommodate double-stacked freight trains. This involves slewing both the Up Main and Down Main lines to create the necessary horizontal clearance.

To achieve this, some level crossings may be modified, and existing drainage structures will be replaced or adjusted where required.

The main line will be slewed to allow for horizontal clearance for double-stacked trains.
