Seymour

Inland Rail is a 1600km freight rail line connecting Melbourne and Brisbane that will transform how goods are moved around Australia.

In Victoria we’re upgrading 262km of existing rail line between Beveridge and Albury at 12 sites, including two in the Seymour area, to allow double-stacked freight trains to pass safely and ensure everyday products can be delivered faster and more reliably.

There are two bridges in the Seymour area where works are required to provide sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains to use the line:

Replacement of the Seymour-Avenel Road bridge is now complete.

At the Hume Freeway bridge in Seymour, we’re realigning the rail tracks and lowering them by 1.5 metres at the lowest point under the bridge.

Works will extend up to one kilometre south and 700 metres north of the bridge.

There will be traffic management on local roads, however we don’t expect this work will have a large impact on the community and we’ll continue to share information as the works progress.

Works have started at Seymour. Check out our image gallery showcasing our progress.

Our construction partner John Holland is working with the community to keep them informed of what to expect during construction.

Community members can continue to talk to the team by calling into our shopfront or contacting us.

We’ve replaced the Seymour-Avenel Road bridge with a higher bridge in the same location to allow sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains pass safely.

The new bridge was opened to traffic in April 2025. Check out our construction gallery showcasing our works at Seymour-Avenel Road.

The design includes a 35 metre span bridge, about 3.2 metres higher than the existing structure and incorporates earth embankments sympathetic to the surrounding environment and retaining walls to reduce impact on Avenel Road.

Building a bridge in the same location reduces our impact on the environment.

Where vegetation removal was required, we complied with the relevant Victorian and Australian Government approval conditions.
