Albury footbridge set for demolition in Inland Rail construction surge
A two-day construction effort will see the Inland Rail project undertake round-the-clock works on the Albury to Illabo section on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December.
November 26, 2025
The track closure will allow rail infrastructure contractor Martinus to carry out works on several sites across the Albury to Illabo section, to prepare the line for future double-stacked freight trains.
In Albury, the Albury Station pedestrian footbridge will be demolished to allow for the construction of a new, higher bridge to ensure vertical clearance for trains, and improve connectivity for the community.
The new footbridge will be designed to meet disability access needs at both ends and feature a dedicated rest area for pedestrians, providing a space for heritage appreciation.
The pedestrian footbridge is scheduled to be closed from Monday 1 December ahead of the track closure weekend and will remain closed for 18 months during construction.
To help minimise disruption and ensure pedestrian access is maintained, detours will be in place via Harold Mair Bridge and Amatex Street bridge throughout the closure period.

During the track possession weekend, the Culcairn footbridge will also be removed to allow for double-stacked freight trains.
In addition, ongoing works will continue at Edmondson Street bridge in Wagga Wagga to prepare for the future demolition of the bridge, including the installation of temporary retaining wall structures and substructure enabling works.
Works will also continue in Junee ahead of the construction of the new Kemp Street bridge, including piling and substructure enabling works, as well as the installation of delineation barriers and screens and temporary retaining wall structures.
Also in Junee, works will commence on the driver changeover platform. When complete, the platform will allow driver changeovers to take place away from the level crossing, without causing inconvenience to the Junee community.
Works can sometimes take longer than anticipated or be cancelled at short notice and rescheduled. Should this occur, impacted residents will be notified.

During November and December, the Inland Rail team will be visiting various locations along the alignment, including Wagga Wagga and Albury, to share project updates and answer questions about the Albury to Illabo section. To find out more about upcoming sessions, visit the Inland Rail website.
James Kennedy, Inland Rail Delivery Director, Albury to Parkes, said:
“The upcoming track possession in December marks a significant milestone for Inland Rail in southern New South Wales. It’s an opportunity to make meaningful progress on the project.
“During this planned window, we’ll safely deliver key works, including removing the Albury Station pedestrian footbridge, as we move closer to completing Inland Rail south of Parkes by 2027.
“We appreciate the ongoing support and patience of local communities and thank residents, businesses, and road users for working with us during this important stage.”
