Inland Rail moves forward with Edmondson Street and Short Street bridges set for demolition
Inland Rail will undertake construction activities across the Beveridge to Albury and Albury to Illabo sections from Saturday 28 February to Sunday 1 March during a scheduled track closure, including the demolition of the Edmondson Street bridge deck in Wagga Wagga and the Short Street bridge in Broadford, Victoria.
February 20, 2026
The Edmondson Street bridge is being removed to make way for a new, higher structure that will provide the necessary clearance for double-stacked trains.
The Edmondson Street bridge deck will be removed using two 37-tonne excavators, which will progressively demolish the deck in three sections. After the deck is removed, crews will dismantle the central support column, followed by the abutments. All demolition materials will be safely removed from the site and transported to a licenced facility.
Once complete, the new Edmondson Street bridge will deliver significant benefits for the community, including a modern and safer design with two traffic lanes in each direction. The bridge will also feature a more accessible pedestrian footbridge on the eastern side, and a new wider footpath on the western side.

The track closure will allow Inland Rail to carry out works on several other sites from Albury to Illabo, to prepare the line for future double-stacked freight trains.
In Albury, planned works include replacing the top chords of the Murray River bridge and undertaking preparatory works for track lowering at the Billy Hughes bridge.
In Junee, excavation and piling works will continue ahead of the construction of the new Kemp Street bridge. Additional works will be carried out at the Junee driver interchange platforms. Once completed, the platforms will allow train driver changeovers to occur away from the level crossing, reducing disruption for the Junee community.
Major work will also take place in the Victorian section of the project, with the demolition of the Short Street bridge at Broadford and construction work at Wandong, Tallarook, Seymour, Euroa and Benalla.
While every effort is made to deliver works as planned, construction activities may occasionally take longer than anticipated or be rescheduled at short notice. If this occurs, impacted residents will be notified.
More information on upcoming track works is available on the Albury to Illabo and Beveridge to Albury works notification pages.
Ed Walker, Inland Rail Acting Chief Operating Officer, said:
“The upcoming track possession marks an important milestone for Inland Rail in southern New South Wales, enabling us to continue progress on this nationally significant project.
“During this planned window, we’ll safely deliver key works, including the demolition of the Edmondson Street bridge in Wagga Wagga, as we move closer to completing Inland Rail south of Parkes in 2027.
“We thank local communities for their continued support and patience, and acknowledge the cooperation of residents, businesses and road users during this important phase of works.”
