Locals impressed by new Wangaratta Station pedestrian underpass

Wangaratta Station Precinct’s new pedestrian underpass opened to the public last week, marking another milestone for the Inland Rail project in Victoria.

A small crowd of locals eagerly awaited the opening on Friday morning, keen to be among the first through the light and bright underpass.

Ray Champlin, from Wangaratta, was out grabbing a coffee when he decided to check out the underpass.

“It’s exceeded my expectations, and I think it’s a great asset to Wangaratta,” he said.

Also impressed, was Wangaratta’s Dianne Cribbers, who said the underpass was “a big improvement” for the town.

“I think it is going to be used very efficiently, especially with the lift. It’s wonderful,” she said.

Within an hour, about 20 people had walked through the underpass, with many pleased by its openness and safety features.

The pedestrian underpass is new modern infrastructure that provides improved community access across the Wangaratta Station Precinct and a way for commuters to reach the new second station platform when it opens.

It improves accessibility with compliant ramps, stairs and lifts and has been designed to be light and bright, emphasising clear lines of sight for community safety.
