Wandong

Inland Rail is a 1600km freight rail line connecting Melbourne and Brisbane that will transform how goods are moved around Australia.

In Victoria we’re upgrading 262km of existing rail line between Beveridge and Albury at 12 sites, including Wandong, to allow double-stacked freight trains to pass safely and ensure everyday products can be delivered faster and more reliably.

In Wandong we’re replacing the Broadford-Wandong Road bridge to allow sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains to use the line.

Building a replacement bridge close to the existing bridge will minimise traffic impacts during construction.

The new bridge will improve safety, connectivity and amenity with a new shared use path, intersection improvements and the addition of open community space extending to Pickett Walk.

Community feedback

Over the past couple of years, our team has met with landowners, neighbours and the wider community to gain feedback on the bridge replacement. To help inform the design we have considered the comments and feedback received from Mitchell Shire Council, stakeholders and the community.

The community has told us improving road and pedestrian safety, minimising impacts during construction and the extension of Pickett Walk is important to them and we’ve improved the design to deliver these outcomes.

Thanks to your feedback, the benefits of the design include:

  • wider lanes and intersection improvements on both sides of the bridge, making it safer for all
  • improved pedestrian access including separated shared use path across the bridge, connecting with the surrounding network of footpaths
  • additional open community space extending to Pickett Walk
  • new seating, picnic table and pathways
  • maintaining access across the bridge during construction.

The new bridge will comply with current safety standards and improve accessibility.

Pickett Walk extension

Community feedback has helped inform the design of the Pickett Walk extension.

We’re including:

  • a landscaped palette featuring more flowering plants
  • more bench seating and a picnic table
  • network of pathways
  • seating area that captures local views
  • ways to recognise local history and the railway.

What’s next?

We’ll continue to progress designs for Wandong, incorporating your feedback where possible.

John Holland is our construction partner and will continue to work with the community.

Community members can continue to share their views by calling into our shopfront or contacting us.

Next steps are to complete site investigations and early works, finalise the design and start construction in 2025.
