Wandong

Inland Rail is a 1600km freight rail line connecting Melbourne and Brisbane that will transform how goods are moved around Australia.

In Victoria we’re upgrading 262km of existing rail line between Beveridge and Albury at 12 sites, including Wandong, to allow double-stacked freight trains to pass safely and ensure everyday products can be delivered faster and more reliably.

In Wandong we’re replacing the Broadford-Wandong Road bridge to allow sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains to use the line.

We’re progressing designs to replace the bridge with a safer but higher bridge to the north of the existing structure.

Building a replacement bridge close to the existing bridge will minimise traffic impacts during construction.

A new bridge will have better pedestrian access with a shared-user path on the south side of the bridge, improving connection to town. The bridge intersections at Broadford-Wandong Road and Epping-Kilmore Road will need to be raised to tie into a newer higher bridge.

Community feedback

Over the past couple of years the project team has met with landowners, neighbours and the wider community to gain feedback on the bridge replacement. To help inform the design we have considered the comments and feedback received from Mitchell Shire Council, stakeholders and the community.

The community has told us amenity, connectivity and safety are important to them, and a new bridge should respect the look, feel and history of the town.

Based on this feedback we are:

  • incorporating a round-about at the Rail Street intersection to improve safety
  • adding a dedicated shared user path across the bridge linking to new and existing pathways to provide safer access and connectivity
  • including earth embankments sympathetic to the surrounding landscape
  • minimising the impact to the community planted pin oak trees
  • providing additional community open space connecting to Pickett Walk
  • maintaining access across the bridge during construction.

All works must comply with current safety standards including AustRoad, Department Transport and Planning and the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA).

In August and September 2023, we shared a 3D visualisation of the latest design, met with stakeholders and held drop-in sessions to answer your questions and listen to feedback.

What’s next?

We’ll continue to progress designs for Wandong, incorporating your feedback where possible.

In June 2024 we appointed John Holland as our construction contractor. Next steps are to complete site investigations and early works, finalise the design and start construction from 2025.

Community members can continue to share their views by calling into our shopfront or contacting us.
